This tool is designed for use by planners, decision makers, and stakeholders who need a better understanding of the planning process for metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) that are in attainment of air quality standards. These MPOs typically go through a five-year planning cycle between metropolitan transportation plan (MTP) updates. This differs from MPOs that are in a non-attainment status for one or more air quality standard and must update their MTPs every four years.
This tool contains the processes and steps that MPOs undertake related to transportation planning activities for which they are responsible. The steps are listed in a bullet-point format, some of which are included as clickable links to related web pages and files.
The main navigation includes the overall topics that are linked to related web pages and files. These web pages and files contain details of the MTP update steps and the other planning processes. Some references include detailed steps and which agencies are responsible for completing them. Other references contain regulations and policies to be followed when completing the planning activities. Additional links take the user to references of other states' processes.
While this tool provides much information about the planning processes, it is not meant to be an all-inclusive list of activities, requirements, and regulations.
Users will notice the following icons throughout the MPO Planning Process website. The following legend explains what each icon means.
In some instances, sample documents, such as a Public Participation Plan, have been included and may be modified as needed by a particular MPO.
